Letter from Mrs. Skahan July 2017

“Give us your child and we shall return you an Apostle.”

July 19, 2017

Dear Springfield Catholic High School Parents & Students,

Summer Greetings!  I hope this letter finds you and your family well as you continue to enjoy the summer months that seem to be racing by.  With the turn of another page of the calendar, we are reminded that the start of a new year is just around the corner: Thursday,  August 17th at 8:00 AM.  I want to inform you of several events that will occur in August.

Most importantly,  I want  to extend a special word of welcome to those families who have just joined our Springfield Catholic High School family.  We are delighted that you have chosen a Catholic education for your student and even more pleased that you have decided to let the faculty and staff at SCHS serve you in this endeavor.  Again, welcome to Springfield Catholic, Home to the Fightin’ Irish!  Please know that we are excited to work together with you to develop your student spiritually, academically, emotionally and physically.

SCHS has been busy over the summer with a few major projects!  The top tennis courts will be resurfaced for the fall season, as well as, a new turf field for football & soccer.  We also are excited to have a much needed new track for our runners and likewise for Bishop Rice!  We will open the year with an assembly on Friday, August 18th, TBA for our fall sports kickoff and the  blessing of the new field and track by Bishop Rice. Parents are always welcome.

The Sothern Studios’  sign up for senior pictures, August 9-10 and 16-17 was sent to you earlier this summer.  Be sure your senior arrives on time and dressed appropriate for this portrait.  These pictures are used for the yearbook.  Freshmen were also sent an invite to take pictures before school starts. Otherwise,  freshmen and new students’ pictures will be taken on the first day of school.  Please be prepared to pay for the package you want when pictures are taken.  Students in grades 9-11 must be dressed in school uniform. See our website for order form and more information.

Freshmen may pick up their schedules in the Academic Office on August 14th 1-3 PM or August 15th 10-12 AM. Student Council members will be available to help students locate and open lockers.  Students are welcome to put supplies in their lockers also. Schedules for 9th-12th graders are available on SIS.  All chromebooks will be given out by English teachers after parents & students read, sign and return the Acceptable Use Policy. The policy is on our website and I have attached the signature page to this e-mail.

All vehicles must be registered with Mrs. Bolls in the Academic Office if you will be parking in the SCHS parking lot.  Passes may be picked up after August 1st.  Students who will get drivers license later in the year may register at a later date.

The SCHS teachers and staff would like to invite all parents to our Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, August 15th from 6-8 PM beginning in the gym.  Freshmen and new students and their parents will kick off the evening at 5:00 PM.  All teachers will be introduced and each teacher will have the opportunity to briefly present their expectations for the year to you.  This is a good time to put a face to a name.  Parents will have the opportunity to add money to lunch accounts, join our Home & School, music and athletic booster clubs. Please visit our Team Store, likewise.

The Springfield Catholic Parent & Student and Athletic Handbooks will be emailed to each family soon.  Both will be posted on our website.  We try very hard to cover all topics and situations but this is impossible.  Please take time to read this document and feel free to contact me with questions.

School supplies are listed on our website under the NEWS tab.  The school year will begin with an A day on Thursday, August 17th.  The school liturgy schedule is posted on our website under the SERVICE tab.  All school masses are the only days Mass Dress Code is required.

Again, I am excited for the school year.  As Catholic educators, it is our primary goal to develop strong disciples of our church.  In achieving this goal, we will prepare your student in all areas of development.  We need your support and prayers for this to be accomplished.  Let’s work together to make this all possible.

Many blessings for the remainder of the summer.  See you all soon.

Jeanne Skahan
